This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing daypack backpacks. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.

Scoring Overview

Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.

Carry comfort & fit (11%)

Can you wear this all day, or do you immediately want to take it off? I’m evaluating back-panel breathability, comparing mesh versus flat foam. I’m checking strap profile: are they thin commuter straps or wider hiking-inspired straps? Bounce control is critical for urban walking and biking. Weight transfer matters here, especially if there’s a sternum strap or hip belt.

Organization & access speed (11%)

How fast can I grab my laptop, keys or sunglasses without digging? Daypacks are carried in and out multiple times per day, so quick-access matters more than on travel packs. I’m checking front quick-access pocket usability. I’m evaluating water bottle pocket performance: flexibility, stretch and whether it holds metal bottles. I’m also testing main compartment access style: U-zip, full zip or half zip.

Water bottle pocket performance (9%)

This is such a major pain point for daypacks that it gets its own criterion. Does the pocket stretch enough for metal bottles? Does it hold securely without sagging? Can you access it while wearing the bag? Many daypacks fail this basic test.

Materials & build quality (11%)

This is the ‘you know when you feel it’ category. I’m evaluating fabric choices and hardware quality. I’m also checking abrasion durability, which is a common issue for commuter packs. I’m testing stiffness versus slouch, which affects laptop safety and how it stands or doesn’t stand. I’m evaluating the quality of internal lining, which is often neglected in daypacks. Cheap lining fails fast.

Weather resistance (8%)

Can I confidently take this out in the rain? I’m checking how it handles rain, snow and spills. I’m also evaluating zipper rain protection like laminated zippers or storm guards. I’m testing bottom panel protection for wet subway floors or gym changing rooms.

Laptop & tech protection (9%)

Is your laptop actually protected, or padded? I look for suspended laptop compartments that keep the device off the bottom. Laptop bounce protection is critical for daypacks. That matters when you drop your bag or it bounces while biking. Tablet sleeve usability is common in this category too.

Carry options & adjustments (8%)

Secondary handles, trolley pass-throughs and how well the straps adjust. Sternum strap inclusion matters here. Many daypacks skip it, but it matters for comfort. Removable straps are especially valuable on hybrid commuter/outdoor bags.

Compressibility & weight (8%)

Can it pack flat when empty? Does it compress well when half-full, or look sloppy? Weight matters here too: light daypacks matter more for travel than heavy travel backpacks. This is more realistic for how people use daypacks when traveling.

Security & closure confidence (9%)

How safe does this feel in crowded places? I’m looking at lockable zippers and hidden pockets. I’m also checking top pocket security. Daypacks often use unsecured quick-access pockets. I’m evaluating zipper pull design, since some designs are too easy to tug in crowds.

Versatility for work, gym & travel (11%)

Can this bag actually pivot between your commute, gym session and a week-long trip? Does it handle mixed loads like a laptop plus sweatshirt plus shoes? Can the materials handle sweat or wet gym clothes? Or is it too specialized for one use case?

Overall value for price (5%)

Where does this land on price versus what you’re actually getting? Build quality, performance and warranty all factor into whether it’s worth the cost.
