This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing travel backpacks. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.
Scoring Overview
Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.
Carry comfort & fit (12%)
Can you wear this all day, or do you immediately want to take it off? I’m evaluating how well the weight transfers to your hips, especially if there’s a hip belt. I’m checking whether the straps are curved or straight and how they contour to your shoulders. I’m also testing if the back panel actually vents or traps sweat. For travelers, that ventilation really matters.
Organization & access speed (12%)
How fast can I grab my laptop or charger without digging? I’m checking the main compartment access: is it a full clamshell, horseshoe zip or top-loader? Do the small pockets actually fit chargers, or are they decorative? Are there pen loops that work? If it’s a bag photographers use, does it have quick-access for camera gear?
Materials & build quality (12%)
This is the ‘you know when you feel it’ category. I’m evaluating fabric choices, like whether it’s 1680D ballistic nylon or 420D high-tenacity. I’m checking hardware quality. Are those YKK #8 or #10 zippers, or something generic? Duraflex buckles or cheap plastic? Does it hold its shape when packed, or does it slouch? That structure matters for both packing and keeping your laptop safe.
Weather resistance (8%)
Can I confidently take this out in the rain? I’m checking how it handles rain, snow and spills. I’m also evaluating the details that matter: are there storm flaps covering the zippers? Does the base panel protect against abrasion and moisture when you set it down on wet ground?
Laptop & tech protection (10%)
Is your laptop actually protected, or padded? I look for suspended laptop compartments that keep the device off the bottom. That matters when you drop your bag. Does the charger pocket actually fit modern chargers? So many bags fail this basic test.
Carry options & adjustments (8%)
Secondary handles, trolley pass-throughs and how well the straps adjust. Can you actually use this bag the way you want to carry it?
Carry-on compliance & expandability (8%)
Does it actually fit overhead or under the seat? When it’s half-full, does it compress well or look sloppy? If it expands, is that expansion actually useful or marketing? Weight matters here too: some bags are tanks, others are featherweights.
Security & closure confidence (10%)
How safe does this feel in crowded places? I’m looking at lockable zippers and hidden pockets. I’m also checking whether the fabric has any slash-resistance like ripstop or reinforced mesh. Are the zippers self-locking or do they slide freely? Those details add up to real security.
Versatility for work & travel (12%)
Can this bag actually pivot between your commute, gym session and a week-long trip? Or is it too specialized for one use case?
Overall value for price (8%)
Where does this land on price versus what you’re actually getting? Build quality, performance and warranty all factor into whether it’s worth the cost.
