If you’ve been thinking about dresses from Quince for your next trip, listen in! The Quince Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress has become one of my go-to pieces for travel. It offers that perfect balance of comfort and style that works for everything from city exploring to casual dinners. Also, it looks perfect in travel photos, whether I’m walking through cities in Europe or sitting at a tasting table in a vineyard.

I think my favorite aspect of it is the softness and flow of it. I haven’t tried anything like it before. The tencel has a certain weight to it, which makes the dress hang off my body and not stick to my legs. That’s the main plus!

In this review, learn more about the fit, who it might NOT be for and my final conclusion on if you’d benefit from having it in your luggage.

Why I chose the Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress

After experiencing the success of other Quince pieces (where do I begin? I love the Quince denim jeans, my linen skirt, my entire Quince maternity wardrobe and all the athleisure), I was curious about their dress line. The Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress caught my attention mostly because the model wearing it looks so glamorous. This review is a true test of how it looks in real life.

I tested this dress for several months, and it’s become my go-to for travel. The decision to try it came after a particularly challenging trip where I needed a dress that could work for both sightseeing and casual dinners without sacrificing comfort or style.

First impressions and design details

When the dress arrived, I was immediately impressed by its softness and drape: it actually did stand up to the photos on the Quince website. The Tencel fabric feels luxurious against the skin, with a weight that makes the dress hang beautifully without clinging to your body.

The fit and flare silhouette is incredibly flattering, with the fitted top and flared waist creating an endlessly flattering shape that works for all body types. The scoop neckline and straps create a confident, feminine look that I love.

But let’s talk about the fit

I talk about this dress in my guide to Quince for petites and that’s because it runs a bit too long for the petite.

I think women taller than 5’4” will have no problem with the length of the “skirt” part of this dress. They’ll also be OK with the length of the torso and the A-line bodice part.

For me, the torso dropped a bit too low, and the skirt was a bit too long as well. You can see in my photos that while I absolutely love the neckline (it’s so flattering and slimming), the total length is not hitting me at an appropriate, nor intended, spot on my legs.

Anyway, that is the challenge with being short, or rather, on the shorter side of the average end of women nationwide. Quince claims that some of their dresses are made for petites, but I barely agree. I think you’d need to have the Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress hemmed if you’re in love with it and you’re shorter than 5’4”.

Real-world testing scenarios

A big test for this dress came during a recent trip to Boston, where I wore this dress for three days straight. We encountered everything from city exploring to casual dinners to some time in the car, and it performed flawlessly.

What impressed me most was how the Tencel fabric handled different weather conditions. In the cool morning air, it provided just enough warmth to keep me comfortable, as long as I had a scarf with me (or tights underneath). When the sun came out and temperatures rose, the breathable fabric kept me cool and comfortable.

The versatility of the Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress as a travel staple showed off during this trip. I wore it with white sneakers for a day of sightseeing, then switched to sandals for dinner. The dress worked perfectly in both contexts, maintaining its sophisticated aesthetic while being comfortable for hours of wear.

What makes the Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress special

I think that – and you’ll notice that this is my main point to hit home – this dress is so flattering and slimming. The material makes it easy to pack and avoid wrinkling, and it works in so many scenarios, from totally casual to dressed up, if you’re trying to formalize it. Here are the items to know, in a list:

  • Sustainable Tencel fabric: Made from 95% Tencel™ and 5% spandex, this fabric is produced to minimize environmental impact.
  • Flattering fit and flare silhouette: The fitted top (with that neckline!) and flared waist create an endlessly flattering shape that works for all body types.
  • Functional side pockets: Two front pockets make this dress equally practical and versatile - perfect for stashing essentials while exploring.
  • Breathable and moisture-wicking: The unique properties of tencel fabric provide efficient moisture management and gentleness to skin, making it ideal for travel.

My favorite aspect of it is the flattering neckline, PLUS the pockets. I find I have trouble finding necklines that make me feel confident, and this one has a great shape, with the scoop and straps. Being as short as I am, it ran longer on me than it looks on the models on the product pages.

Another highlight: handy and functional slit pockets at the sides. While a phone weighs them down, to be quite honest, they are good for stashing things like my toddler’s sticker collection, or a simple hotel swipe key.

Perfect for travel

This dress is designed to move with you, wherever the day takes you, both to different destinations and occasions. It’s a comfy approach to challenge my LBD (little black dress) that doesn’t sacrifice style for comfort.

The midi length (43.5” in a size Small) works well for various occasions, from sightseeing to casual dinners (but note: it may be too long for petites). The fabric drapes beautifully and doesn’t wrinkle easily, making it perfect for packing in your suitcase.

Like I mentioned above, taking it with me makes it an easy daily travel outfit choice as long as I build on my accessories appropriately for the weather.

Styling versatility and outfit pairing

For the Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress, the clean design makes it incredibly versatile for travel. I’ve worn this with everything from flats to sandals to ankle boots, and it always looks appropriate. The brown color (and there are a few colors to choose from!) works well in both casual and slightly dressier settings, and takes me from spring through summer and into fall.

During a recent trip to visit friends, I wore this dress with sandals and a crossbody bag for a day of exploring, then switched to flats and a cardigan for dinner. The dress worked perfectly in both contexts, maintaining its sophisticated aesthetic while being comfortable for hours of wear.

The fit and flare silhouette is particularly flattering - it creates a feminine shape without being too tight or restrictive. This makes it ideal for travelers who want one dress that can handle multiple occasions and activities.

Materials and care (take note)

For care, this is where I have to say I get nervous. I’ve washed tencel items before and they seem like they shrink. I think with some care and thought, it’s possible to get this dress to look okay after washing, but in my experience, the edges aren’t perfect like they are when you take the product out of the shipping bag.

This dress is machine-washable (cold, gentle cycle) and should be laid flat to dry. That means I put it on my drying rack and sometimes it takes over a day to dry. If you are traveling in Europe, or Asia, or really anywhere outside the US/Canada, you’ll notice dryers are hard to find. Well, conveniently, you will not need one for washing this dress.

What I like most about the sustainable construction is how it doesn’t compromise on quality or comfort. The Tencel fabric feels luxurious and performs well, proving that sustainable fashion can be both beautiful on the body, and practical.

Comfort and fit details

The Tencel fabric is what really sets this dress apart from other travel dresses. It’s incredibly soft and comfortable against the skin, with a weight that makes the dress hang beautifully without clinging to your body.

The fit and flare silhouette provides a flattering shape that works for all body types. The fitted top creates a polished look, while the flared waist provides comfort and movement. The scoop neckline and straps create a confident, feminine look that I love.

What I appreciate most about the fit is how the dress moves with your body. The Tencel fabric has just enough stretch to be comfortable without being restrictive, making it perfect for all-day wear during travel.

Long-term durability and wear

After an entire season of wearing it from spring to fal, the Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress has held up remarkably well to the demands of travel. The Tencel fabric maintains its softness and drape, with just a bit of irregularity after gentle washing in my washing machine. Luckily, it has that flowy shape at the bottom, so unnevenness in the bottom hem is not noticeable.

The construction feels solid and well-made, with attention to detail that suggests this dress will last through many trips. The sustainable materials are holding up better than I expected, proving that eco-friendly fashion can be durable.

Comparison with other travel dresses

Compared to other travel dresses I’ve tried, the Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress offers a unique combination of sustainability and style. Most travel dresses either look too casual or don’t provide enough comfort for all-day wear. This manages to look sophisticated while providing serious travel benefits.

I’d compare this dress to the other ones I feature in my favorite best dresses for travel. It’s up there with the ones from Bluffworks, REI, Patagonia and prAna. For me, a travel dress must have pockets, and the Quince dresses typically perform to that end.

What could be improved

While I’m overall very satisfied with this dress, there’s the main area for improvement and that is how it runs long for petite women. I wish it came with varying lengths so that I could have it hit a bit higher on the leg. Taller women will enjoy how this flatters like a midi dress, but for me, it edges on too long.

When to choose the Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress for travel

The Tencel Jersey Fit & Flare Dress is perfect for travelers who want sustainable, versatile style. If you’re looking for a dress that can handle both sightseeing and casual dinners in several seasons, this is an excellent choice. I’ll say it again: that flattering neckline is gorgeous!

Choose this Quince dress if you like the fit and flare silhouette and want sustainable materials that actually work. If you prefer a more casual look or don’t need the upscale design, other more rugged travel dresses might be a better choice.
