After looking into the Bugaboo Butterfly 2, we say it delivers on its promise of luxury and convenience. Here are a few points on what we think:
Why We Chose to Highlight This Stroller
Bugaboo’s Butterfly 2 stands out for pairing a truly one‑second fold with a spacious seat and large basket.
According to Galt Baby’s product page, the Butterfly 2 weighs 16 lbs, folds down to 17.6 × 9.6 × 21.8 inches and has a roomy seat with a 26.8‑inch height under the canopy.
It’s also loaded with sustainability features—Bugaboo uses recycled aluminum, bio‑based fabrics and vegan leather grips, and claims a 37 % reduction in CO₂ footprint compared with the original Butterfly.
These factors, combined with a generous 17.6‑lb basket capacity and car‑seat compatibility, make it one of the most fully‑featured travel strollers available on the market. Of course, it comes at a price to reflect this and it is definitely on the high end of what we have found in travel stroller product research!
Personal Experience
In practice, the fold of the Butterfly 2 is almost magical. Pull the handle, and the stroller collapses instantly, basically in one second.
The automatic lock engages and you can carry it by using the strap or the handle. The high backrest on the seat provides plenty of headroom for taller children, and the adjustable leg rest lets a toddler nap comfortably. The basket easily holds a large diaper bag plus personal items.
On the downside, the stroller feels heavier than ultralight models when carrying it up stairs, and at 16 lbs you’ll notice the difference, compared with the Joolz Aer+ or Zoe Traveler (some of the lightest strollers in the travel stroller market).
Friends of ours (to quote) said that the Butterfly 2, “Light, durable, good wheels, fast and easy fold with one hand, shake to open. Fits in overhead bin. An easy security check.”
When It’s Worth the Investment
The Butterfly 2 is worth its premium price for parents who want a travel stroller that doesn’t skimp on comfort or features. Its spacious seat, large basket and eco‑friendly materials make it great for daily errands as well as travel.
If you plan to use this travel stroller extensively or if you have a taller toddler, the extra space on the Butterfly 2 will be worthwhile, so that your child isn’t cramped.
Galt Baby notes that the stroller accommodates children from birth (with a car seat) up to 50 lbs. It offers an under‑seat basket capacity of 17.6 lbs, which for us, means including a bulky diaper bag, some shopping bags, toys and snacks.
Considerations
The primary downfalls of the Butterfly 2 are obviously the cost and the weight.
At around $599, the Butterfly 2 sits at the top end of the travel stroller market. Its 16‑lb weight may make it less appealing to those who need to carry the stroller for long stretches. Many families who are looking to spend upwards of $500 are probably also looking for a hyper-lightweight stroller that can be carried in one arm for a while, like walking through an airport.
Car seat adapters are sold separately for the Butterfly 2, adding to the overall cost. The handlebar height is fixed at around 40 inches, which may be tall for shorter parents (like Becca).
Lastly, while it folds compactly, it may still need to be gate‑checked on smaller planes due to its total exterior length.
Bottom Line
The Bugaboo Butterfly 2 is a travel stroller that packs a punch for sure. It excels in comfort, sustainability and storage. If you can justify its premium price and slightly heavier weight, it’s one of the most luxurious compact strollers available today.
