This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing tech bags. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.
Scoring Overview
Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.
Core functionality (12%)
Tech organizers succeed or fail based on whether they genuinely solve the intended carry problem. I’m evaluating how well it manages cables, chargers, SD cards and small devices. I’m checking whether the layout reduces clutter instead of adding to it. I’m testing if there’s enough structure to prevent items from tangling. I’m also assessing how well it works in daily carry and travel workflows. A tech bag must eliminate friction, not create more.
Materials & build quality (11%)
This is the you know when you feel it category. I’m evaluating high-denier fabrics, ripstop or structured poly and nylon choices. I’m checking zipper quality, comparing reverse coil, YKK and Zoom options. I’m testing reinforced stitching in stress points. I’m assessing lining durability since chargers and dongles create abrasion. I’m also evaluating hardware durability for pullers, clips and loops. Tech bags often face sharp edges and heavy loads relative to their size.
Organization & access speed (13%)
People pick the winner in this category within seconds of opening it. I’m evaluating elastic loops, mesh pockets, zip pockets and open slots. I’m testing quick one-hand access to essential items. I’m checking logical arrangement to see if there are any dead zones. The real question is whether you can find your items without digging. Access speed matters more here than in larger bags.
Device protection (12%)
Even small organizers must prevent cable tips and devices from being crushed. I’m evaluating padded zones for fragile accessories. I’m testing semi-rigid structure for drop protection. I’m checking suspended laptop or tablet pockets when applicable. I’m assessing smooth internal lining for screens or drives. I’m also evaluating shock absorption in corner areas. Protection matters even when the bag is small.
Packability & footprint (9%)
Too bulky means not travel-friendly. I’m evaluating how easily it fits in backpacks, totes and travel bags. I’m testing shape retention versus compressibility. I’m checking bulk when fully loaded. I’m assessing space efficiency relative to capacity. The question is whether it slides into luggage without taking up too much space.
Ease of use (10%)
Usability matters more here than in larger bags. I’m evaluating intuitive pocket layout. I’m testing simple zippers and smooth opening paths. I’m checking one-hand usability. I’m assessing whether there’s a learning curve or fiddly design. The best tech bags stay open when you want them open and close when you need them closed.
Durability & resilience (9%)
A tech bag should last years, not months. I’m evaluating abrasion resistance from chargers and adapters. I’m testing zipper strength when stressed by internal bulk. I’m checking structural integrity during tight packing. I’m assessing resistance to daily handling and travel abuse. Tech-specific wear patterns matter here.
Ease of maintenance & cleaning (7%)
Tech gear is dirty, so organizers must clean easily. I’m evaluating wipeable interior for dust and debris. I’m testing stain resistance on exterior fabric. I’m checking light-colored liners for visibility. I’m assessing quick dry time if exposed to moisture. Cleaning should be simple, not a chore.
Versatility across devices (8%)
Versatility increases long-term value. I’m evaluating how well it works with different laptop sizes, tablets, chargers and dongles. I’m testing usefulness for both travel and office setups. I’m checking adaptability to future tech upgrades. I’m assessing whether it works as a standalone carry or inside a larger bag. The best tech bags grow with your gear.
Security & closure confidence (7%)
Even small tech bags need reliable closures. I’m evaluating tight zippers that won’t spill. I’m testing internal pockets that hold items securely. I’m checking whether cables can slip out accidentally. This becomes especially important when going through TSA or changing bags. Closure reliability prevents lost gear.
Overall value for price (2%)
Where does this land on price versus what you’re actually getting? I’m evaluating performance versus longevity versus price. I’m testing whether the structure comes without unnecessary weight. I’m checking balance between padding and portability. Build quality, durability and warranty coverage all factor into whether it’s worth the cost.
