This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing duffel bags. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.

Scoring Overview

Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.

Carry comfort & fit (10%)

Duffels are carried differently than backpacks, so I’m evaluating shoulder strap comfort. That means checking padding density and how well the strap length adjusts. I’m testing hand carry comfort by evaluating handle wrap quality. Many travel duffels now offer backpack strap mode, so I’m checking how well that performs when you need hands-free carry. Most importantly, I’m assessing how balanced the bag feels when it’s fully loaded. Does the weight sit well on your shoulder, or does it pull awkwardly?

Exterior organization & access (10%)

How fast can I reach what I packed? I’m checking the main opening design because wide-mouth openings are key for duffels. I’m evaluating end pockets for shoes, toiletries and dirty laundry separation. I’m testing quick-access pocket usability. For hybrid duffel-backpack models, I’m checking laptop compatibility. I’m also testing zipper operation under strain because duffels get overstuffed regularly.

Materials & build quality (12%)

This is the “you know when you feel it” category. I’m evaluating fabric choices and hardware quality. I’m checking abrasion resistance because duffels get dragged everywhere. I’m assessing base reinforcement since the bottom takes the most abuse. I’m testing hardware durability, comparing buckles and swivels, plastic versus metal. I’m evaluating seam construction because that’s a big differentiator for long-term durability.

Weather resistance (10%)

Can I confidently take this out in the rain? I’m checking how it handles rain, snow and spills. I’m evaluating seam sealing or taping, which is common in high-end waterproof duffels. I’m testing zipper water resistance, especially on the main opening. I’m also checking mud and dirt resistance by seeing how easily the fabric wipes clean.

Capacity & interior organization (8%)

I’m evaluating shape efficiency because cylindrical duffels waste space while rectangular duffels pack better. I’m checking internal pockets, which are often minimal or absent in duffels. I’m testing laundry and shoe separation options. I’m assessing rigid versus unstructured interior because that affects packability and ease of loading.

Carry options & adjustments (12%)

I’m evaluating shoulder strap padding and adjustability. I’m testing hand carry handle quality. I’m checking backpack strap mode performance for travel duffels that offer it. I’m assessing how well the bag balances when loaded and whether the straps transfer weight effectively.

Compressibility & storage footprint (8%)

Duffels rarely nest inside a suitcase. Instead, I’m evaluating compressibility. Does it pack flat or roll into itself? I’m checking the storage footprint when empty. I’m assessing stiffness versus collapsibility, comparing soft duffels against structured travel duffels. This is a major selling point for duffels and should be scored clearly.

Security & closure confidence (10%)

For duffels, zipper strength under tension is critical when overstuffed. I’m testing zipper lockability, which is useful when checking bags. I’m evaluating pocket security, especially if used for gym or commuter use. Hidden pockets matter, but they’re less important than zipper performance. The real question is whether the closures hold up when you need them most.

Versatility for gym, travel & weekend use (12%)

Can this bag actually pivot between your gym session, weekend trip and commuter use? I’m checking gym compatibility, looking for ventilated pockets for shoes and sweaty gear. I’m evaluating weekend travel usability. I’m testing airline compatibility to see if it fits overhead or qualifies as a personal item for small duffels. If it includes backpack conversion, I’m testing how usable that mode actually is.

Overall value for price (8%)

Where does this land on price versus what you’re actually getting? Build quality, performance and warranty all factor into whether it’s worth the cost.
