This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing travel jackets. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.
Scoring Overview
Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.
Comfort against skin (10%)
Can you wear this all day without wanting to take it off? I’m evaluating collar and neck comfort, which is a common failure point for jackets. I’m checking cuff comfort, comparing elastic versus Velcro versus knit cuffs. I’m testing lining material feel, looking at mesh versus smooth versus fleece linings. I’m also assessing underarm chafe potential, which becomes especially important for shells worn over short sleeves. The question is whether the jacket feels comfortable against your skin during long travel days.
Fit, mobility & sizing accuracy (12%)
Whether the piece lines up with the size chart and accommodates different builds. I’m evaluating shoulder mobility and articulation since jackets often restrict range of motion. I’m checking sleeve length accuracy, which is critical for warmth and weather protection. I’m testing hem length, comparing short versus regular versus parka-style cuts. I’m assessing layering allowance to see if it fits over a hoodie or midlayer. I’m also checking post-wash or rain shrink and stretch issues. Fit must account for layering and motion, not just static measurements.
Materials, durability & easy care (10%)
Jackets vary dramatically in material tech, so I’m digging deeper here. I’m evaluating fabric durability, testing abrasion resistance from backpacks, seat belts and airport wear. I’m checking water resistance or waterproofing treatment quality. I’m testing stain resistance and dry time after rain. I’m assessing odor resistance, especially if lined with wool or fleece. I’m evaluating ease of washing technical fabrics. Dryer use varies by material, and synthetics tolerate travel better than natural fibers. This is the you know when you feel it category, but for jackets the material choices determine performance.
Breathability & venting performance (10%)
This is important for travel jackets, especially softshells and lightweight puffers. I’m evaluating ventilation performance, checking pit zips and mesh panels. I’m testing moisture vapor transfer since shell fabrics vary widely. I’m assessing overheat control during walking and airport movement. This is a key differentiator for travel jackets versus casual jackets. The question is how well the fabric vents during a city walk or a hike without trapping sweat.
Temperature regulation & wind performance (12%)
This is the defining function of a travel jacket. I’m evaluating comfort range across variable weather, from airport to train to city. I’m testing wind resistance, which is a game-changer for ultralight jackets. I’m checking warmth-to-weight ratio to see if the insulation performs efficiently. I’m assessing draft control, looking at hem cinch, cuffs and collar behavior. The question is whether this jacket keeps you comfortable from chilly mornings to warm afternoons while handling wind and temperature shifts.
Weather protection (14%)
This should be a major scoring category for jackets since weather protection is core to the category. I’m evaluating windproofing performance. I’m testing water resistance or waterproof rating, checking how the exterior handles rain, snow and spills. I’m assessing seam sealing quality. I’m checking DWR quality and how well it maintains water beading over time. I’m evaluating hood function, looking at adjustability, coverage and stability in wind. Unlike hoodies and sweaters, jackets must be scored on weather protection. This is the confidence level of being able to take something out in the rain without worrying about your gear getting soaked.
Stretch & shape retention (6%)
This is only relevant for stretch-woven or stretchy softshell jackets. I’m checking articulated stretch performance to see how well the fabric moves with you. I’m testing return to shape after sitting on planes or compressing in luggage. I’m evaluating cuff and hem elasticity longevity. For non-stretch jackets, I score mobility instead of stretch. The question is whether the jacket returns to form after a long flight or day of wear.
Pocket function & security (10%)
This is very important for travel outerwear. I’m evaluating number and placement of pockets. I’m comparing zippered versus open pockets. I’m checking for internal passport pockets. I’m testing phone pocket depth and bounce resistance. I’m assessing hand warmer pocket comfort. I’m evaluating chest pocket usability with backpacks. Travel jackets often replace a small sling, so pocketing matters. The question is whether items stay put and whether you can access what you need quickly.
Wrinkle resistance & packability (8%)
This is essential for travel jackets. I’m evaluating packing cube compression friendliness. I’m testing crease recovery speed to see how quickly wrinkles fall out. I’m checking shell stiffness or drape after packing. Some jackets emerge perfect from luggage while others look crushed. I’m also assessing pack size, looking at whether it compresses or stuffs into its own pocket. I’m evaluating weight-to-warmth ratio and ease of carrying as a second layer. This is extremely important in travel outerwear.
Styling versatility (8%)
I’m evaluating travel to casual to smart casual adaptability. I’m testing compatibility with jeans, trousers and travel pants. I’m checking low-profile branding and modern, clean silhouette. Jackets must look appropriate in multiple environments. The question is whether this jacket works across different travel scenarios without looking out of place.
Overall value for price (4%)
Where does this land on price versus what you’re actually getting? I’m evaluating build quality, weather performance, durability and warranty coverage. I’m comparing materials and construction against the price tag. The question is whether the features and performance justify the cost compared to competing options.
