This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing phone cases. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.

Scoring Overview

Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.

Core functionality (9%)

Does this case protect your phone from drops, scratches and impact? Does it improve grip to prevent accidental slips? I’m checking whether it works with wireless charging and MagSafe if those features matter. I’m evaluating easy access to buttons and cameras. I’m also testing how it enhances security and usability during travel. A phone case must protect without compromising everyday function. The question is whether it solves the travel problem it was designed to fix.

Materials & build quality (9%)

This is the you know when you feel it category. Phone cases don’t use fabric or zippers. Instead, I’m evaluating polycarbonate, TPU, silicone and rubber blends. I’m checking aluminum or stainless-steel bumpers for premium cases. I’m testing soft-touch coatings and texturing for grip. I’m assessing anti-yellowing materials for clear cases. I’m evaluating button mechanism quality, looking at tactile feel and durability. I’m also checking lens bezel height and strength. Protection and feel come directly from materials.

Phone protection (13%)

This is one of the most important categories for phone cases. I’m evaluating drop protection rating, comparing MIL-STD 810G standards and 6-foot versus 10-foot drop ratings. I’m testing shock absorption through TPU edges, air cushions and reinforced corners. I’m checking raised bezels for screen and camera bump protection. I’m assessing hard-shell backplate rigidity. I’m evaluating compatibility with screen protectors. I’m also testing protection from side pressure inside backpacks or pockets. The phone case must survive real travel abuse, not just desk drops.

Camera lens protection (8%)

Camera protection deserves its own scoring category. I’m evaluating raised bumpers around the camera module. I’m checking rigid reinforcement around lens cutouts. I’m testing whether the case prevents smudging or lens interference. I’m assessing compatibility with attachable lens systems. This is especially important for content creators who rely on their phone cameras during travel.

Grip & handling security (9%)

Phones drop most while multitasking during travel, so grip matters. I’m evaluating grippiness, comparing matte, textured and rubberized finishes. I’m testing tapered edges that improve hold. I’m checking slip resistance in sweaty or wet hands. I’m assessing comfort when holding for long periods. The question is whether the case prevents drops when you’re juggling luggage, boarding passes and gear.

MagSafe & accessory compatibility (8%)

This defines usability for many travelers today. I’m evaluating strength of magnetic lock. I’m testing reliability with wallets, battery packs and mounts. I’m checking alignment accuracy for accessories and wireless chargers. I’m assessing whether the case causes overheating during wireless charging. MagSafe compatibility matters when you’re using your phone as a travel tool with multiple accessories.

Packability & footprint (7%)

A great case disappears in the pocket. I’m evaluating slimness versus protection tradeoff. I’m testing bulk in pockets, belts or slings. I’m checking smoothness that prevents snagging inside bags. I’m assessing ease of sliding into tight clothing pockets. I’m also evaluating extra thickness caused by MagSafe rings or wallet attachments. The question is whether the case adds minimal bulk while maintaining protection.

Ease of use (9%)

Ease-of-use matters when traveling one-handed. I’m testing tactile, crisp button response for volume and side buttons. I’m checking one-handed operation capability. I’m evaluating easy swipe-up gestures without lip interference. I’m testing easy access to charging ports. I’m assessing compatibility with phone grips or straps. For MagSafe cases, I’m checking alignment accuracy for accessories and wireless chargers. The question is whether the case makes your phone easier to use, not harder.

Durability & resilience (9%)

Travel environments are rough on phone cases. I’m evaluating long-term resistance to stretching or loosening. I’m testing scratch resistance, especially for clear cases. I’m checking grip texture longevity. I’m assessing UV resistance to prevent yellowing. I’m testing shock absorption after repeated drops. I’m also evaluating resistance to oils, sweat, sunscreen, sand or lint. The question is whether the case holds up over months of travel abuse.

Ease of maintenance & cleaning (5%)

Phone cases accumulate grime fast during trips. I’m evaluating wipeability for sweat, dirt and sunscreen. I’m testing stain resistance. I’m checking lint resistance for silicone cases. I’m assessing anti-fingerprint coatings. I’m also evaluating cleaning effort for textured cases. The question is whether the case stays clean with minimal effort or becomes a hygiene problem.

Versatility across phone models (5%)

This affects long-term usefulness. I’m evaluating fit for various device sizes or generations. I’m testing compatibility with screen protectors. I’m checking interchangeable MagSafe or wallet accessories. I’m assessing whether it works with most wireless chargers. I’m also evaluating adaptability if switching phones in future cycles. The question is whether the case remains useful as your phone needs change.

Organization & access speed (4%)

This category only applies to wallet cases, folios or MagSafe attachments. For slim cases without storage, I skip this category. I’m evaluating quick access to cards or IDs. I’m testing secure retention for cards. I’m checking airport boarding pass convenience. I’m assessing quick attach and detach behavior for MagSafe wallets. I’m also evaluating whether there’s risk of cards slipping out while traveling. The question is whether the storage features work reliably during travel.

Overall value for price (5%)

Where does this case land on price versus protection, longevity and features? I’m evaluating whether the protection level matches the cost. I’m testing build quality relative to price. I’m checking warranty coverage and repair options. Build quality, protection performance and durability all factor into whether it’s worth the cost.
