This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing neck pillows. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.
Scoring Overview
Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.
Core functionality (14%)
Does it genuinely improve sleep or rest in an upright or semi-upright position? I’m checking whether it supports your head without collapsing. I’m testing if it prevents head-droop forward or sideways. I’m evaluating whether neck alignment stays comfortable over long flights. A neck pillow’s core job is simple: keep your head from falling while you sleep. If it doesn’t solve that basic problem, nothing else matters.
Materials & build quality (10%)
This is the you know when you feel it category. I’m evaluating shell fabric softness and breathability since the pillow sits against your skin for hours. I’m checking stitching durability under compression because pillows get stuffed into bags constantly. For memory foam pillows, I’m testing foam density and whether it rebounds properly. For inflatable pillows, I’m checking valve quality and whether it holds air reliably. I’m also assessing odor resistance and hypoallergenic materials since pillows accumulate sweat and skin contact over time.
Comfort & support (16%)
This is the category that makes or breaks a neck pillow. I’m evaluating neck alignment and cervical support to see if it keeps your spine in a natural position. I’m testing side-sleep versus back-sleep support since most travelers shift positions mid-flight. I’m checking pressure relief on your jaw and shoulders because uncomfortable pressure points will wake you up. I’m assessing whether it avoids overheating against your skin. I’m testing shape stability during long wear to see if it collapses or shifts. People will stop using a pillow immediately if this category fails, so it gets weighted accordingly.
Thermal regulation & breathability (8%)
Neck pillows can run hot, and heat is one of the biggest reasons people abandon travel pillows. I’m evaluating heat buildup around your neck during long flights. I’m testing breathable materials and moisture-wicking covers. I’m checking ventilation channels in foam pillows. I’m assessing whether the fabric traps heat or allows airflow. This matters especially on warm flights or when you’re wearing layers. A pillow that overheats becomes unusable fast.
Packability & footprint (12%)
Packability is often the deciding factor when choosing a pillow. I’m evaluating compressibility, comparing memory foam compression versus inflatable pillows that pack flat. I’m testing weight relative to support because heavy pillows defeat the purpose of travel gear. I’m checking ease of attaching to luggage with straps, snaps or loops. I’m assessing space footprint inside a personal item or daypack. I’m also comparing size tradeoffs since larger pillows aren’t automatically better if they don’t fit in your bag. The best pillows compress small without sacrificing comfort.
Ease of use (10%)
A pillow that takes effort to use will never get used on short flights. For inflatable pillows, I’m testing quick inflation and deflation speed. I’m checking correct, intuitive positioning to see if you can put it on without thinking. I’m evaluating how simple it is to attach externally to bags. I’m testing ease of adjusting tightness or angle. I’m assessing whether there’s an awkward setup or learning curve. The best pillows work immediately without instruction or fiddling.
Durability & resilience (8%)
Travel pillows experience more abuse than they appear to. I’m evaluating foam rebound longevity to see if memory foam loses its shape over time. For inflatable pillows, I’m testing valve durability and whether it fails after repeated use. I’m checking fabric resistance to sweat and friction from constant skin contact. I’m assessing shape retention after being compressed in a bag for months. I’m testing seams holding under tension when you stuff it into tight spaces. Travel pillows get thrown around, sat on and compressed constantly, so durability matters.
Ease of maintenance & cleaning (10%)
Pillows sit against skin and hair for hours, so hygiene matters a lot. I’m evaluating machine-washable covers and whether they hold up after multiple washes. I’m testing stain resistance since pillows accumulate sweat and oils. I’m checking odor control for long trips where you can’t wash it immediately. I’m assessing quick-dry behavior after washing. I’m also evaluating ease of removing the cover since removable covers make cleaning much easier. A pillow that’s hard to clean becomes a hygiene problem fast.
Adaptability across trip types (6%)
A great pillow adapts to the unpredictable realities of travel. I’m evaluating whether it works in planes, trains, buses and cars since each environment has different seat angles. I’m testing comfort both upright and reclined. I’m checking if it works as a hotel or hostel booster pillow. I’m assessing whether it’s comfortable for short flights as well as long-haul journeys. I’m also evaluating whether it works for multiple body sizes and neck lengths. The best pillows handle whatever travel throws at them.
Versatility for different sleep positions (6%)
Most travelers shift positions mid-flight, so the pillow must support that. I’m evaluating side-sleeping support, which is often the hardest position for neck pillows. I’m testing chin-support effectiveness to prevent forward head droop. I’m checking back-sleep comfort and alignment. I’m assessing how well it works when leaning against windows or walls. I’m also testing supportiveness when rotating sleeping angles mid-flight. The best pillows adapt to your movement instead of forcing you into one position.
Overall value for price (4%)
Where does this land on price versus what you’re actually getting? I’m evaluating performance versus longevity versus price. I’m testing whether the build quality matches the cost. I’m checking warranty coverage and repair options. Build quality, comfort performance, durability and ease of maintenance all factor into whether it’s worth the cost compared to competing options.
