This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing crossbody bags. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.
Scoring Overview
Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.
Carry comfort & fit (14%)
Crossbodies sit differently than slings or totes. I’m evaluating strap width and padding because thin straps dig into your shoulder after a few hours. I’m checking how the bag sits on your hip and torso. Does it dig in or bounce when you walk? I’m testing crossbody balance to see if the bag tilts forward awkwardly. Realistic wear time is one to three hours for most crossbodies. All-day comfort depends on size and strap design, which is critical here since crossbodies rely heavily on the strap for comfort.
Organization & access speed (14%)
Crossbody users want fast access. This is one of the most important categories. I’m testing one-handed access ability. Can you swing the bag to the front and unzip it with one motion? I’m evaluating front organizer pocket usability for keys, wallet and phone. I’m checking opening depth and style because wide openings work better than tight ones. I’m testing internal visibility since light linings help you find things fast. For travel crossbodies, I’m looking for dedicated passport and boarding pass areas. This is about quick access more than volume.
Tech & device protection (8%)
Crossbodies rarely hold laptops. Instead, I’m focusing on phone sleeve protection and whether it’s padded enough for drops. I’m checking tablet or iPad mini compatibility if the crossbody includes one. For small camera crossbodies, I’m evaluating camera and compact lens padding quality. I’m testing divider flexibility for organizing smaller items and general padding for fragile items. This is the correct version for this category.
Materials & build quality (10%)
This is the you know when you feel it category. Crossbodies take more friction and rubbing than most bags due to constant body contact. I’m evaluating strap hardware strength because small metal connectors can fail first. I’m checking zipper smoothness at angles since crossbodies often have curved zippers. Cheap zippers bind here. I’m testing lining durability because keys and charger edges scrape it constantly. I’m evaluating shape retention, comparing structured versus slouchy designs. Fabric choice and reinforcement in stress points matter too.
Weather resistance (8%)
Can I confidently take this out in the rain? I’m checking zipper sealing because crossbodies expose zippers directly to rain. Water can seep in if zippers aren’t protected. I’m evaluating fabric coatings, especially for smaller travel crossbodies. I’m testing bottom panel protection since crossbodies rest against dirty or wet surfaces. I’m also checking sweat resistance on the body-facing panel. Crossbodies can get sweaty in summer travel, and this matters.
Strap adjustability & wear modes (10%)
Crossbodies don’t have handles or trolley pass-throughs by default. I’m evaluating strap adjustability speed and smoothness, comparing quick-adjust buckles against standard sliders. I’m testing crossbody-to-shoulder conversion if the bag offers it. I’m checking quick-release buckles, which are common in modern tech crossbodies. I’m evaluating stabilizer strap inclusion for biking or walking, though this is optional. Can you actually use this bag the way you want to carry it?
Compressibility & travel packability (8%)
Crossbodies rarely nest inside a suitcase. Instead, I’m testing whether it packs flat in luggage without taking up too much space. I’m checking if it deforms permanently when compressed. Some crossbodies collapse and become unusable when under-packed. I’m evaluating how well it works as an in-flight personal item organizer. This is much more realistic for how people use crossbodies when traveling.
Security & closure confidence (12%)
Crossbodies are prime pickpocket targets, so this is important. I’m checking zipper pull friction. Can someone quietly unzip this from behind you without you noticing? I’m evaluating body-side pocket safety for passport and wallet storage. I’m testing hidden pockets and their usefulness. I’m comparing magnetic versus zip closures since magnets are less secure but faster. How safe does this feel in crowded places?
Versatility for daily use & travel (10%)
Can this bag actually pivot between your daily routine and travel? I’m checking everyday usability for phone, keys, wallet and sunglasses. I’m evaluating travel readiness, looking at passport storage and packable size. I’m testing business-casual friendliness. How well does it adapt to your actual use patterns?
Overall value for price (8%)
Where does this land on price versus what you’re actually getting? Build quality, performance and warranty all factor into whether it’s worth the cost.
