Estonia was one of our most memorable and surprising trips, and I say that because we really enjoyed every moment. It is a special place, and if you’re packing for Estonia, I have a few things to share with you in this packing list that should help.

Estonia is never terribly hot, so summer, spring and early fall are lovely times to visit, with moderate temperatures and a few layers needed to stay warm during breezy visits to the coastline and chilly nights in the Old Town.

With this packing list, you can grab everything you need to have an awesome trip in Estonia, and remember to use the packing list selector tool below to choose how long you’ll be staying.

Packing essentials

Here’s a list of the basics I always pack when I go to Estonia and the surrounding region. Luckily, Estonia and its neighbors use the Euro, so that’s one thing you can have covered quickly. The rest of the crucial packing items here will be right in your bag during your trip.

Passport

Since Estonia is part of the Schengen Area, you’ll want to make sure your passport is valid for at least six months past your travel dates to avoid any issues at immigration.

Credit cards and cash

While cards are widely accepted even in the smallest cafes, you’ll definitely want to carry some Euros for market stalls, public transport or tipping at traditional Estonian restaurants.

Travel insurance

Between the potential for flight delays and the wonky cobblestones that are just waiting to trip you up, having travel insurance gives you that extra layer of peace of mind while you’re exploring the Baltics.

Your Phone and charger

It’s safe to say your phone is coming with you, but the charger is one of those things that easily slips the mind when you’re rushing to catch a flight. Double check your bag for it!

Power Bank

Relying on Google Maps to find those hidden alleys in the Old Town will drain your battery faster than you think. Keep a power bank handy so you’re never left without a charge.

Reusable water bottle

Staying hydrated is key when you’re walking miles between city walls and bogs. The good news is that Estonian tap water is perfectly safe and actually tastes quite good.

Don’t underestimate the summer sun while you’re out exploring hilltop castles or wandering through the Telliskivi Creative City. A bit of sunscreen will save you from a nasty burn.

First-Aid Kit

I like to keep a tiny kit with bandages and pain relievers in my daypack just in case. It’s much better to have it right there than to be hunting for a pharmacy when you have a blister from those cobblestones.

You’ll want a bag that can handle being dragged across historic sidewalks and through busy airport terminals. We often prefer backpacks for Europe because of all the cobblestones, but a sturdy roller works if it has great wheels.

Shoe pouches

Walking the streets of Tallinn or hiking in the bogs means your shoes will definitely pick up some dust and mud. These pouches are a must for keeping your dirty soles away from your clean shirts.

Clothing for cool temperatures

Estonia has distinct seasons, so pack accordingly. Spring and fall are mild, summers can be warm, and winters are cold. Layers work well for the variable weather, especially near the Baltic coast. During our summer trip to Estonia, we woundup wearing fall jackets as soon as the sun started getting lower, and mostly wore pants every single day.

Comfortable walking shoes

Believe me when I say you’ll be doing a lot of walking on those historic cobblestones. Your feet will definitely thank you for choosing support and comfort over high fashion.

Shoes and footwear

As we mostly were on our feet during our entire trip in Estonia, we learned that good walking shoes are an essential, especially for climbing those steps on the stone walls of the Old Town! There’s also so many staircases that will get you good views. Make sure you break in your shoes before you go!

Then, for hiking in the forests outside Tallinn, a good pair of trail shoes or hiking boots should do the trick. We mostly did light hiking in the region, with nothing too intense. Socks can make all the difference in keeping feet warm and sweat-free, too.
