Chicago is an urban destination that experiences all four seasons, despite what a lot of travelers hear about it! The Windy City lives up to its name with lake-effect weather patterns that change quickly. In summer, you’ll need warm-weather packing and in winter, bundle up, because Chicago gets absolutely frigid and snowy!

Join me in checking out this packing list for Chicago, packing appropriately for the cold winters, mildly hot summers, windy days and the mix of indoor and outdoor activities. Use the trip length selector above to adjust quantities based on how long you’re staying.

Packing essentials

Check out these essentials that guide all my trips, from the things you need at the ready in your fanny pack, belt bag or daypack, and the stuff that is easy to forget at the last minute. Remember to reference this list again in the moments before you head out the door.

Passport or ID

Don’t leave home without it! If you have your passport, make sure it’s valid for at least six months beyond your return date. If you’re planning your trip, check the expiration date right now!

You can check out this passport wallet to help hold your passport.

Credit cards and cash

While Chicago is very card-friendly, you’ll want to keep some cash on hand for street food, tipping at bars or hitting those legendary blues clubs that might be cash-only.

Travel insurance

Between the unpredictable lakefront weather and the potential for flight delays at O’Hare, having travel insurance gives you that extra layer of peace of mind while you’re exploring the neighborhoods.

Your Phone and charger

It’s safe to say your phone is coming with you, but the charger is one of those things that easily slips the mind when you’re rushing to catch a flight. Double check your bag for it!

Power Bank

Chicago days can be long, and with all the photos you’ll be taking of the Bean and skyline, you’ll need to keep your phone charged.

Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is so important when you’re walking miles between museums and deep dish pizza spots. You’ll find plenty of refill stations around the city and at the airports to keep your bottle full.

Sunscreen

Don’t let the ‘Windy City’ nickname fool you into thinking it’s always cool. The sun reflecting off Lake Michigan or the downtown skyscrapers can be incredibly strong, especially in the peak of summer.

First-Aid Kit

I like to keep a tiny kit with bandages and pain relievers in my daypack just in case. It’s much better to have it right there than to be hunting for a pharmacy when you have a blister from walking the Loop.

Travel-Sized Toiletries

If you’re the type to travel carry-on only like we are, remembering the TSA 3-1-1 rule is key. We use small reusable containers to breeze through security without any holdups.

Peak Design Wash Pouch

Wash Pouch

A dedicated wash pouch keeps your bathroom essentials organized and ensures that a leaky shampoo bottle won’t ruin your favorite Chicago graphic tee.

Flare Audio SLEEEP Ear Plugs

Ear plugs

Chicago is a vibrant, bustling city, but that means street noise can be a factor. If you’re a light sleeper, these are absolute lifesavers for blocking out the sound of the ‘L’ train or late-night sirens.

Umbrella

The weather near the lake can change in an instant and a sudden downpour is never out of the question. A compact umbrella fits easily in your bag and saves you from getting soaked while you’re out and about.

Packing organization needs

For any trip, I think of the foundational elements below in helping my packing to be organized, easy to manage and neat. Good organization matters when you’re dealing with seasonal weather changes in Chicago and the surrounding region in the Midwest.

Peak Design Travel Packing Cubes

Peak Design Travel Packing Cubes

I honestly can’t travel without these anymore because they make organizing layers so easy. They’re perfect for dealing with Chicago’s wide temperature swings between the windy outdoors and air-conditioned interiors.

Quince Carry-On Hard Shell Suitcase

You’ll want a bag that can handle being dragged across city sidewalks and through busy airport terminals. Make sure yours has sturdy wheels that won’t give out on you halfway through your trip.

Winter clothing and wind layers

Chicago winters are cold, windy and can be brutally cold. The locals are used to it, but if you come from somewhere more mild, it could be shocking. You’ll need layers, warm outerwear and protection from the wind. The lake effect makes it feel even colder than the temperature suggests.

Warm winter coat

A heavy, wind-resistant coat is absolutely non-negotiable if you’re visiting between December and March. Walking down Michigan Avenue with that lake wind hitting you is no joke!

The North Face Lined Beanie

Warm hat, gloves and scarf

When that biting winter wind starts whipping off the lake, you’ll be so glad you have these. Covering every bit of exposed skin is the secret to staying comfortable while you’re out sightseeing.

PAKA Original Crew

Warm sweater

The secret to surviving a Chicago winter is all about the layers. A warm sweater works for cozying up in a cafe and adds crucial insulation when you’re brave enough to face the cold.

Summer apparel and layers

Chicago summers can be surprisingly warm and pleasant, and every year, the city seems to be experiencing a warmer version of summer. You’ll want lightweight, breathable fabrics that work for both city exploration and outdoor activities. Remember that there’s still a breeze along the water, and that nights may get cool. Having layers is key, especially as you head into restaurants, bars, museums and cafes with A/C.

Free Fly Men's Elevate Lightweight Tee

Lightweight, breathable shirts

Chicago summers can get surprisingly humid, so you’ll want breathable fabrics that won’t stick to you. The lake breeze can still make things feel cool once the sun goes down, so having a layer handy is a smart move.

Bluffworks Ascender Shorts

Shorts or lightweight pants

These are my go-to for wandering through different neighborhoods or setting up a picnic in Millennium Park. You’ll want something comfortable that lets you move freely all day long.

Chubbies Men's Swim Trunks

Swimwear

You might not associate Chicago with beaches, but the lakefront is beautiful in July and August. Pack your suit in case you want to take a dip at North Avenue Beach or just lounge on the sand.

Ibex Nomad Joggers

Joggers

There’s nothing better than switching into cozy joggers after a long flight into O’Hare or a full day of hitting the museums. They’re my favorite travel day staple.

I find leggings to be one of the most versatile things I pack because they work for city walks and can even double as an extra layer under your jeans if the temperature drops.

Free Fly Women's Breeze Dress

Summer dress

Chicago has an incredible dining scene, and you’ll probably want at least one outfit that’s a bit more elevated. A simple dress is an easy way to go from a day of sightseeing to a nice dinner in the West Loop.

Shoes and footwear

Chicago requires comfortable walking shoes year-round. The city is walkable, but you’ll cover a lot of ground. Weather-appropriate footwear is essential, like having some boots for winter in case of snow. Brr!

Comfortable walking shoes

Believe me when I say you’ll be doing a lot of walking, from the lakefront trail all the way through the Loop. Your feet will definitely thank you for choosing support and comfort over fashion.

Weather-appropriate boots

If you’re visiting in the height of winter, you’ll need boots that can handle slush, snow and icy sidewalks. Make sure they have good traction so you’re not sliding around while you explore.
