The Mugsy Classic Jeans have become my go-to jeans for travel. They’re super comfortable, lightweight and very nice to wear!

4.18 / 5

The Mugsy Classic Jeans are comfortable stretchy travel jeans with excellent versatility and 25+ color options, offering true-to-size waist fit though they run long in length and have a more relaxed fit than some prefer.

Why I chose the Classic Jeans

After experiencing the success of other Mugsy styles like the chinos and chambray shirts, I was curious about their jeans line. It’s the bread-and-butter of Mugsy, after all. The Classic Mugsy jeans caught my attention because of the brand’s promise of comfortable, stretchy jeans that could handle travel. And to boot, they come in 25 colors and shades of denim. There is something for everyone, even me (I own too many pairs of pants!).

I’ve owned these jeans for a year, and they’ve become my go-to for casual travel. When I’m paralyzed by choice, a solid everyday pair of jeans that has some stretch and a color that’ll go with everything in my suitcase is key.

The decision to try them came after my previous military green jeans got worn out and I needed a replacement that could handle both travel and everyday wear. I’m pretty satisfied with the Mugsy jeans as my default “green jean” replacement. And I’ll be glad to try them in clay red, black, gray, tan or any of the full array of denim washes.

First impressions and design details

When the jeans arrived, I impressed how soft and lightweight they were. The color I chose is a versatile military green that works for both casual and slightly dressed-up looks, which is exactly what I was looking for.

The fabric felt substantial and comfortable, with the stretch that moves naturally with my body. The construction felt solid and well-made, with attention to detail like stitching.

Real-world testing scenarios

The most comprehensive test came during a recent trip to Mexico City, where I wore these jeans for four days straight–and on flights, too. We encountered everything from city exploring to casual dinners to airport layovers, and they performed flawlessly in all contexts.

I wore them with a simple T-shirt for our daily cafe run, then switched to a button-down shirt for dinners out with friends. The jeans looked appropriate in both contexts, maintaining their sophisticated look and being comfortable for hours of wear.

The stretch fabric delivered on its promise. The cotton-spandex blend moved naturally with my body whether I was sitting in cramped airplane seats or running after our toddler and crouching down to play with toys in the airport. The fabric maintained its shape remarkably well - no bagging out at the knees or sagging after a long day of wear. (The only thing to note is the length, which is slightly long)

What makes them special

Surprisingly, and while I’m not really included in this, I will say it anyway: Mugsy jeans come in four inseam lengths which make them good for tall guys. In addition to that, they run long. In addition to that as well, they come in so many colors, that I think this is a standout feature.

  • Stretchy comfort: Packed with the same comfort and fit you’d expect from traditional jeans, but with that “good flex” Mugsy mentions.
  • True to size waist: Fits true to size in the waist, which is helpful for ordering online.
  • Soft, non-scratchy feel: They’re soft and not scratchy, though I think Mugsy’s claim that they feel like sweatpants is a bit of a stretch for sure. They do not feel like sweatpants at all.
  • Four inseam lengths: I haven’t seen this on so many other jeans: Mugsy jeans come in inseam lengths 30, 32, 34 and 36. This means really tall guys get included on a good Mugsy fit, too.
  • SO many colorways: I have never seen jeans that come in 25+ colors. There is something for everyone, like if you wanted Burgundy or Dark Olive jeans for a particular purpose.

The fit and sizing

I got these in 32x30, my typical size, and here’s how they fit:

  • Waist: True to size, which I appreciate for online ordering. This was the easy part.
  • Length: They run a bit long for my 5’9” height. I see the product photos showing the model (who’s 5’11”) wearing them rolled up twice to show off the blue accent stitching, and that’s how I wear mine. I work best with a 30” that runs shorter.
  • Seat and legs: They have some “space” at the seat and legs compared to my favorite jeans from DUER, which I use as my gold standard. They don’t hug the legs quite as much, but this might be your preference. Or, it’s a new style I’m adapting to.
  • Rise: Comfortable rise for the fly, a flattering height that sits well on my hips. I think other guys will agree, too.

Styling versatility and outfit pairing

I chose the Hydes green (every Mugsy color has a “name”). It makes them versatile for travel, the same as blue jeans would be. Mugsy makes so many colors to choose from. Head to the Mugsy Jeans product page and take a look at the rainbow of hues.

I’ve worn my Mugsy jeans with everything from a simple T-shirt to a button-down shirt, and they always look appropriate. The military green (Hydes) works well in both casual and slightly dressed-up settings.

Build quality and durability

The construction feels solid, and they’ve held up well to regular wear and washing. I personally don’t put them in the dryer. Well, Becca does our laundry.

She air dries them on our laundry rack and then will fluff them in the dryer for no more than 5 minutes if they have something like cat hair or shedding from our wool rug on them. The care instructions from Mugsy specifically say to hang dry. If you put them in a hot dryer, it will eventually wear out the basically everything that isn’t cotton. I’d avoid that.

The stretch factor is a requirement for me. I don’t really go for non-stretch jeans anymore, as I’ve worn through a few that had no stretch factor and they didn’t survive more than a year. When I find jeans that I like, I usually wear them every day for several weeks or even longer some times. I wash jeans at a bare minimum in order to preserve them (and that’s why I have so many pairs of pants!).

What I appreciate most about the construction is how the stretch doesn’t compromise the jeans’ durability. The fabric maintains its shape and color well, even after multiple washes and heavy use. This is crucial for travel jeans that need to look good and perform well.

Long-term durability and wear

After over a year of regular use, the jeans have held up well to heavy travel use. The fabric blend maintains its shape and stretch properties, with no bagging out at the knees or sagging after long days of wear.

I think I’m pretty happy with these. The Mugsy jeans are hard to hate on. Honestly!

Compared to other travel jeans I’ve tried, the class jeans offer a unique combination of style and functionality. Most travel jeans either look too technical or don’t provide enough comfort for all-day wear. These manage to look sophisticated while providing serious travel benefits.

Comparing them to DUER jeans, my gold standard, as I mentioned above, they’re actually slightly cheaper. The difference is that Mugsy jeans are not built with a crotch gusset, and that may be where they are lacking.

I will say though, that the price is attractive, compared to other jeans I have reviewed like Mott & Bow men’s jeans.
