This page details the specific criteria we use when reviewing sling bags. Each criterion has a weight that contributes to the overall score. Learn more about how our scoring system works.

Scoring Overview

Each criterion below is weighted as a percentage of the total score. We evaluate each product on a scale of 1 to 5 for every criterion, then multiply by the weight to calculate the final rating.

Carry comfort & fit (14%)

Sling comfort works differently than backpack comfort. I’m evaluating strap width and padding because thin straps dig into your shoulder after a few hours. I’m checking how well the sling hugs your torso. Body-contour fit matters here. I’m testing bounce and sway control when you’re walking fast. That stability makes or breaks all-day wear. I’m also checking left and right shoulder compatibility. Some slings favor one side over the other. Comfort is one of the top differentiators in this category.

Organization & access speed (14%)

Sling buyers care deeply about fast access. I’m testing one-handed access. Can you swing the bag to the front and unzip it with one motion? I’m evaluating pocket layout efficiency for phone, wallet, sunglasses, AirPods and charger placement. For camera slings, I’m checking quick-access for gear swaps. I’m testing main opening depth because shallow openings make items spill when you unzip. I’m also evaluating internal visibility. Light linings help you find things fast. Dark holes make you dig blindly. Sling organization is more about quick access than volume.

Device & fragile-item protection (8%)

Almost no sling has laptop storage, so I’m focusing on what slings actually carry. I’m checking phone pocket protection and whether it’s padded enough for drops. For camera slings, I’m evaluating camera and compact lens padding quality. I’m testing tablet or iPad mini sleeve protection if the sling includes one. I’m also checking divider flexibility for organizing smaller items. This is the correct version for slings.

Materials & build quality (10%)

This is the you know when you feel it category. I’m evaluating abrasion resistance because slings rub against your clothing constantly. That friction wears down cheap fabrics fast. I’m checking zipper smoothness in curved paths since most slings use curved zippers. Cheap zippers bind here. I’m testing internal lining durability because keys and charger edges destroy cheap linings. I’m evaluating hardware quality, looking at magnetic buckles and strap adjusters. Fabric choice and reinforcement in stress points matter too.

Weather resistance (8%)

Can I confidently take this out in the rain? I’m checking zipper sealing because slings expose zippers when worn cross-body. Water can seep in if the zippers aren’t protected. I’m evaluating rain shedding on the top panel. I’m testing bottom panel protection since slings often rest against dirty or wet surfaces. I’m also checking sweat resistance on the back panel. This is a common pain point when wearing slings for long periods.

Strap adjustability & rotation performance (10%)

Totes and backpacks use handles. Slings don’t. I’m evaluating strap adjustability speed, comparing quick-adjust buckles against standard sliders. I’m testing whether there’s a stability strap for running or biking. I’m checking rotational ease, meaning how smoothly the sling swings to the front when you need access. Can you actually use this bag the way you want to carry it?

Compressibility & travel packability (8%)

Slings are often a travel side-bag, so this matters. I’m testing whether it packs flat when empty. I’m checking if it fits inside a backpack as a secondary personal item. I’m evaluating whether it holds its shape when removed from luggage. Some slings collapse and become unusable when under-packed. This is much more realistic for how people use slings when traveling.

Security & closure confidence (10%)

How safe does this feel in crowded places? I’m checking zipper pull resistance. Can someone unzip this from behind you without you noticing? I’m evaluating body-side pockets, looking for hidden pockets against the torso. I’m testing magnetic buckle strength. I’m checking pickpocket protection in crowded areas. The real question is whether the closures hold up when you need them most.

Versatility for daily use & travel (10%)

Can this bag actually pivot between your daily routine and travel? I’m checking EDC capability for phone, keys, wallet and sunglasses. I’m evaluating travel usability, looking at passport storage and hands-free convenience. I’m testing bike and walk compatibility. For camera slings, I’m checking camera carry flexibility. How well does it adapt to your actual use patterns?

Overall value for price (8%)

Where does this land on price versus what you’re actually getting? Build quality, performance and warranty all factor into whether it’s worth the cost.
