I’m a NYC native, and I will tell you that for any time of year, you need something different for visiting what I think is ‘the Greatest City on Earth.’ That’s right, your trip to NYC requires packing quite a bit of stuff, but remember, this gigantic city is full of every store you can think of, so you also will have access to anything you forgot, at your fingertips (and more).

The Big Apple gets all four seasons, and gets them STRONG, from hot, muggy and steamy summers to frigid winters with ice, wind and snow. So, depending on when your trip is, you’ll need quite the different list of packing supplies. Take it from me, though: this is doable, and you’ve got this. Use my list below to take into account all the different considerations for a NYC vacation, and let’s get into seeing what you need.

Use the packing list selection tool below to choose your length of stay!

Essentials

These are the non-negotiable items you’ll need regardless of trip length. Think of this as your foundation. Everything else builds on having these basics covered.

Passport or ID

Don’t leave home without it! If you have your passport, make sure it’s valid for at least six months beyond your return date. If you’re planning your trip, check the expiration date right now!

You can check out this passport wallet to help hold your passport.

Credit cards and cash

NYC is expensive, so make sure you have payment methods ready. Most places accept cards, but cash is useful for street vendors, tips and smaller purchases. Contactless payment methods work great for the subway and many stores.

Your phone and charger

Your phone is essential for navigation, getting subway times, contactless payments and staying connected. You’re going to want your phone (and a charging cable) to help you get home. A charging cable is helpful because if you go to a bar, you can often have them plug in your phone for you! You can sometimes find outlets in coffee shops, too.

Power bank

If you know your phone battery is likely to die, and don’t want to worry about stopping somewhere to charge (like a cafe or bar) a power bank is a must have! Even as a local, I will usually have one when I commute to and from the city so I know I always have a functional phone.
