Why we like it

The Tortuga Travel Sling is like the best of both worlds: the technicality, quality and functionality of Tortuga backpacks, but with the hands-free convenience of a sling bag or belt bag.

Why does it feel so strong? The waterproof ECOPAK™ EPX200 sailcloth construction with YKK zippers provides all my things from the elements when I’m outside in a potentially-rainy location or vacation destination.

Does it help me stay organized? Yes, for a fanny pack, the smart organization of two mesh pockets, a zippered organizer pocket, and a flat zippered pocket next to my body keeps all my essentials organized. In fact, this is one of the better waist packs and belt bag products for organization, and Tortuga of course does a great job at it (if you’ve seen their lineup of backpacks or tested any, like I have, you know that the brand does NOT mess around!).

The wide waist/body strap and molded back panel ensure comfort for all day wear; to tha tend, I find that this fanny pack/belt bag has a lot more structure, so to speak, than some other waist bags. The adjustable strap (6-46 inches) allows for versatile wear styles, for people of various sizes.

And the weight? It’s not the hyper-smallest of the bunch that I suggest, but at 0.5 lbs, it’s lightweight enough for everyday carry and also for packing into a larger backpack or suitcase when traveling.

Considerations

The specialized organization features may be overkill for travelers who prefer simple, minimal designs, like a main compartment with a single zipper pocket. That’s Tortuga for you, though! They’re always one step ahead in terms of having thought of every single way to organize small items inside a bag.

For the cost: the higher price point reflects the exceptional quality of Tortuga products. It’s a pricy option, but it’s also one that should last a lifetime.

Lastly, and the main hesitation for me, is that this unisex belt bag is not a fashion statement, in my opinion. I wouldn’t wear it as a style-forward accessory, and I wouldn’t take it on business travel. Tortuga products are for the upscale and function-focused traveler, especially those who have budgets to spend on the most quality items out there.

One more thought is that I think the Tortuga Sling Bag looks a little goofy as a waist pack. This one is best kept as a crossbody sling bag.
