Remedies

At this age, it was when we traveled internationally and took our first flight with our baby, and she came down with a fever on the first day. We learned a few lessons:

  • Come prepared with your own trove of infant medicines, a thermometer and other remedies for colds or allergies (this applies to all ages!).
  • If traveling very far from home, come up with a loose plan of knowing where to go for health emergencies.

Drinking water

  • Your child may be already drinking water at 6+ months: remember to get bottled or purified/filtered water in international destinations.
  • Wash water cups daily, with a baby bottle brush set at your accommodation.

Food cleanliness and allergies

  • If you have concerns, limit your child’s consumption of new foods, new snacks, new allergens or choking hazard food products.
  • At this age, your baby may put EVERYTHING in their mouth! That includes car toys, stroller toys, things at a restaurant and things
  • Travel with a baby spoon. At this age, we were using one to squirt applesauce from pouches onto a spoon, because our baby had not “caught on” yet to eating pouches from the small opening. Your baby may be different, but it’s great to have a spoon for other things you may come across at restaurants and fit them into a baby-sized mouth.

Sleep safety

  • Remember a baby monitor for nighttime and naptime.
  • If you’ll be sharing a room with your child, remember to ensure a proper setup of a product like a SlumberPod.
  • This was the age at which we started finding it “challenging” to share a hotel room with our child.

Snack safety

  • If you have particular snacks you wish to give your child on a short trip, bring them all from home to avoid new food types that may present stomach issues.
  • You might also have favorite baby brands that you like by now. Bring them along, or research access to grocery stores for your arrival.

Milk safety

  • At this age, you may still be giving your child formula or breastmilk. Ensure your accommodation has a minifridge or kitchen fridge for proper storage.
  • Arrange or plan for a way to clean pump parts and have them dry fully, especially if you will be traveling in a place where tap water is not potable.
